Coincidences of a shifted hexagonal lattice and the hexagonal packing
A geometric study of twin and grain boundaries in crystals and quasicrystals
is achieved via coincidence site lattices (CSLs) and coincidence site modules
(CSMs), respectively. Recently, coincidences of shifted lattices and
multilattices (i.e. finite unions of shifted copies of a lattice) have been
investigated. Here, we solve the coincidence problem for a shifted hexagonal
lattice. This result allows us to analyze the coincidence isometries of the
hexagonal packing by viewing the hexagonal packing as a multilattice.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, submitted to ICQ12 Conference Proceeding
Socio-Economic and Political Implications of the Termination of General Assistance Benefits for Undocumented Victims of Torture in Minnesota
The Minnesota State Legislature amended the General Assistance benefits statutes, effective October 1, 1993, to exclude undocumented persons. This research project attempts to define the socio-economic and political issues as they impact victims of political torture who reside in Minnesota without legal status. The history of public assistance, its underlying social problem, and its judicial context reveals the controversy over entitlements versus rights. Social program and policy systems analysis highlights the linkage between the goals and objectives of the legislation and the message that is inherent in the delivery of services. An examination of the files of four clients of The Treatment Center who received General Assistance prior to October 1, 1993, reveals intensive intervention by social work professionals and severe strain upon the individual clients
Deconstructing the Digital Divide: Critical Media Literacy Implementation in the Classroom
In this presentation I explore the complexity of the digital divide and propose to use the framework of critical praxis put forth by Paolo Freire in the Pedagogy of the Oppressed (1970). Using Freire we are able to build on existing research on the digital divide, contextualize the multi-dimensional issue of the divide, and respond to the social, cultural, and political issues within and beyond the classroom environment
The Dark Triad of Personality: A Discussion of the Moral and Evolutionary Implications
Individuals who exhibit the Dark Triad traits of personality are considered to be among the most troublesome members of society. This review seeks to investigate how the dark traits displayed by these persons adversely impact their moral behavior as a product of evolutionary development and adaptation, and as mediated by the BFAS aspect of Compassion. Participants in the present study completed an extensive questionnaire that included measures of general personality traits, psychopathy, the Dark Triad of personality, assignment of moral weight, sociosexuality, infidelity, and myriad additional demographic features. Predictions for the correlations between the Dark Triad traits, moral assignment, Compassion, and evolutionary based measures were generally supported
